Matthew Pearce

Matthew Pearce

Born and brought up in Caterham, Surrey, Matthew enjoyed a full career in the Army.  At the tender age of nineteen, he was commissioned at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and initially served in the infantry before choosing to specialise in administration, with diverse disciplines including pay, pensions, personnel and IT project/change management. In 1999, he qualified as a Chartered Member of the British Computer Society.  His military service included operational tours in Northern Ireland and postings within Germany and the USA.  On retiring, he worked for the Lloyds Banking Group getting a valuable insight into the commercial sector before deciding to go back to what he knows best; he now continues to work part time with the Ministry of Defence.

In April 2018, he was head hunted by INSPIRE’s Director to take up the post of Research Consultant.  His specific remit is to research and identify new sources of funding.  He is very much the charity’s ice breaker and front man and spends much of his time surfing the internet and then following up his leads by telephone or email in order to identify if grant making trusts are able and willing to invest in our research programme.  This is a part time post in which Matthew excels and thoroughly enjoys.

He is married to Nadia, who is a house matron at Winchester College.  They have two adult children: Emma who is a teacher and Tom who also joined the Army.  Matthew enjoys walking Dolly the dog, jogging, increasingly slowly to keep fit and endlessly chattering about his latest motorbike.

The National Scientific Committee

This world class forum consists of some of the United Kingdom’s finest specialists in the field of medical physics and electronics. Drawn from across the leading teaching hospitals and universities, members give their time freely to consider development and research projects specifically related to Spinal Cord Injury.

Members of the Scientific Committee, two of whom are spinal cord injured* are constantly developing new research projects which might benefit those living with Spinal Cord Paralysis. In addition they have considerable influence over the choice of thesis subjects elected by PhD students. Twice a year the Committee meets formally to assess its findings and to analyse and assess costs of new projects. In turn these are then submitted to the INSPIRE Board of Trustees for funding. This in effect gives the green light for projects to start.
